A few useful habits
for a day outside.
Good days begin with a little preparation and leave plenty of room for attention.
Before you leave
Choose a route suited to your experience, the available daylight, and the forecast. Check current access notices and local conditions. Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return.
Along the way
Stay on established paths where requested, give wildlife space, and carry everything you brought back out. Make your turnaround decision early enough to return comfortably. A shorter walk can still be a good walk.
What to notice
Look for how light changes along the path. Listen for moving water before you can see it. Notice the difference between the open edge of a forest and its interior. Write down one detail you would otherwise forget.
When you get home
Dry out your equipment, check what needs replacing, and save a few notes. Next time, those small observations may be more useful than the distance you walked.
