What earns a place in the pack
A short list of useful things, and the small comforts that make a day outside your own.
A day pack becomes personal through use. Things stay because they helped once, or because they make a long pause more comfortable. We try to remember the difference between useful and merely reassuring.
Start with the essentials
Water, food, navigation, a suitable extra layer, a light, and basic first-aid supplies form the starting point. The route, conditions, and season decide what else comes along. We review the forecast and the relevant trail information each time.
Keep one small comfort
A folded sit pad weighs little and turns a damp log into a lunch spot. A notebook catches the details that a phone photograph misses. Neither is essential for everyone, but both have earned their place in our packs.
Pack for the day you are actually taking, with enough margin for it to change.
Review what came home unused
After a walk, we take a moment to dry things out and put them away. It is also a chance to notice what worked. Small adjustments over time are more useful than chasing a perfect list.
